The International CLIVAR Monsoon Project Office (ICMPO), a node of the International CLIVAR Project Office (ICPO), was established at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) under an agreement with the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), with the approval of the Union Cabinet on 12th August 2015. CLIVAR (Climate and Ocean - Variability, Predictability, and Change) is one of the core projects of WCRP dedicated to the understanding and prediction of Ocean-atmospheric interactions and their influence on climate variability and change.

One of the core responsibilities of ICMPO is to support the acitivites of the Monsoons Panel, jointly established by CLIVAR and GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Exchanges), another core project of the WCRP. ICMPO also supports cross-panel linkages within the working structure of the WCRP and its core projects, on monsoon-related matters. A key example in this regard is the Indian Ocean Region Panel (IORP) under CLIVAR. In addition, ICMPO supports some of the general tasks of the ICPO such as the publication of CLIVAR Exchanges.
